Basic Food Storage Ideas

By Janet Towne

Build a small supply of food that is part of your normal daily diet.  One way to do this is to purchase a few items each week to build a one week supply of food, then you can gradually increase your supply until it is sufficient for three months.

Basic Food Storage Items
You might want to consider the following basic items for storage.  These amounts are enough to sustain an average woman for one year.  A man would need more, a child would need less.

Grains (rice, wheat or other cereal)                    300 lbs
Powdered milk                                                        100 lbs
Sugar or Honey                                                        30 lbs
Salt                                                                             5 lbs
Water                                                                         14 gallons

*These items provide a diet that supplies approximately 2,300 calories per day.  The amount recommended for an average 25 year old woman.

The following is a delicious salad and a way to use your wheat.

A Meal in One Salad

1 sweet pickle, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 large carrot, grated
1/4 green pepper, chopped
1/4 onion chopped
6 radishes (optional)
1 cup mayo
1 can tuna, chicken, or ham
2 cups cooked whole wheat
mix all together and chill
*serves 8

To cook the whole wheat:
1 cup whole kernel wheat
2 cups water
1/2 tsp. salt
put in crock pot and cook overnight on the lowest setting
